Legionella at Luxor in Las Vegas

EMSL Analytical offers stringent testing services for Legionella bacteria

Health officials in Nevadahave reported that Legionella bacteria, which causes Legionnaires’ disease, was found in water samples in the Luxor Hotel-Casino. One man recently died after staying there, and two other guests were sickened by the disease in the spring of last year. The hotel is owned by MGM Resorts International, which immediately began the remediation process after the bacteria was detected. The company is already dealing with a lawsuit from guests who claim that they were infected with Legionnaires’ while staying at the Aria Resort & Casino—which is half-owned by MGM Resorts.Legionnaires’ disease is a very serious form of pneumonia that results in long term health effects or a flu-like illness called Pontiac Fever. Most individuals become infected by inhalingLegionella bacteria in the air; it is not spread from person to person. Contaminated mist or water vapor diffuse the bacteria in hot tubs, cooling towers, faucets, showerheads, and other water systems. A current or previous smoking habit, chronic lung disease, age (usually 50 years or older), and the use of certain rheumatoid arthritis and chemotherapy drugs can increase the risk of contracting Legionnaires’ disease.

Wow, that's a scary thing to read about. You never know when or where something like that will strike. I assume this could have been prevented somehow, right?
